Engine Oil Explained: Choosing the Right Type for Your Vehicle

Engine oil does far more than just lubricate — it protects, cools, and cleans your engine from the inside out. Yet, with so many options on the market, it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Understanding the differences between oil types can help you choose the right one for your vehicle and keep your engine running smoothly for years.

The Role of Engine Oil

Every time you start your car, thousands of metal components move at high speeds and temperatures. Engine oil forms a thin protective layer between these moving parts, reducing friction and preventing wear. It also helps transfer heat away from the combustion chamber and carries contaminants to the oil filter where they’re removed.

Without the right oil, your engine can quickly overheat or seize up — leading to costly damage.

Types of Engine Oils

There are three main types of motor oil:

  • Conventional Oil: Made from refined crude oil, this is the most affordable option. It works well for older vehicles or engines with simple designs but breaks down faster under heat and stress.

  • Synthetic Oil: Engineered for performance, synthetic oils are chemically formulated to offer superior protection and stability. They resist breakdown, reduce deposits, and improve fuel efficiency — making them ideal for modern engines.

  • Synthetic Blends: A mix of conventional and synthetic oils, offering better performance than regular oil at a lower price than full synthetic.

Oil Viscosity and Grades

Oil viscosity (thickness) is denoted by a code like 5W-30. The first number (5W) indicates how easily the oil flows in cold temperatures, while the second number (30) shows how it performs at engine operating temperature.

Choosing the wrong viscosity can reduce fuel efficiency or cause excessive wear. Always refer to your owner’s manual or the oil cap for the manufacturer’s recommendation.

Why Dexos™ Certification Matters

For GM vehicles, Dexos™ certified oils meet General Motors’ strict performance standards. Using non-certified oils can void your warranty or harm your engine. At PD Oils, we proudly distribute Dexos™ certified lubricants that ensure reliability, efficiency, and compliance with your manufacturer’s requirements.
